History of RE/MAX

RE/MAX, an acronym for Real Estate Maximums, was founded in 1973 by Dave and Gail Liniger with a mission to change the status quo. The Linigers found the current agent/broker split common in the industry to be an unfair bargain for agents and decided to challenge the system. At that time, the commission split model was common in most real estate offices. Under this model, real estate agents forfeited 50 percent of their earnings in order to receive services and an office. This system meant that the top earners often had to subsidize the lower earners. This created a public perception of professional agents as part-time amateurs.

The Linigers knew that to retain top real estate professionals, agents would need to earn all of their commissions and share in the cost of overhead expenses and management services. So they developed RE/MAX with the vision of agents earning maximum commissions while providing the highest quality service. Though there were many opponents, this revolutionary model was a success and proceeded to have a ripple effect on the entire industry. RE/MAX quickly became an industry leader and changed the perception of real estate agents. Over the years, the company has been recognized for maintaining a well-compensated, educated, and professional workforce. RE/MAX is known as a front-running company providing education, resources, and support to dedicated, entrepreneurial agents. The company's red, white, and blue colors, along with the iconic balloon logo, have come to represent a trustworthy leader in the real estate industry.

Regional and International Information

In 1978, Howard McPherson obtained franchise rights to open a RE/MAX office in Georgia. He continued to obtain franchise rights for Southern Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The franchise rights are still owned by the McPherson family. Now known as RE/MAX Regional Services, or RRS, the company focuses on providing exceptional support to all agents, brokers, and offices in each of the four regions. RRS focuses on being sure all company members have access to the best technology and most advanced training. The company takes pride in maintaining the highest level of expertise in order to help homeowners and sellers achieve their goals.

RE/MAX has also experienced international expansion into Canada, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Australia, Europe, New Zealand, Mexico, and South America. These expansions have positioned RE/MAX as the largest real estate franchise sales organization in the world.

Charitable Contributions

RE/MAX has served as the official real estate sponsor of the Children's Miracle Network since 1992, during which time the company has raised over $147 million for children's hospitals. RE/MAX also supports the Susan G. Komen Foundation as well as regional causes.
